Earth Day, April 22 Meet 9 year old Lucia, Environmental Activist

Today is Earth Day, a day to demonstrate support for environmental protection. The Earth Day network works year round towards solving climate change, ending plastic pollution and protecting endangered species. Visit http://www.earthday.org to see some of the great work they are doing.

To mark Earth Day I would like to introduce you to Lucia Torresi – a very inspiring and impressive young lady, right here in Hong Kong.

Lucia is an environmental activist and at just 9 years old her strength of belief along with her confidence and poise is impressive.

I had a brief chat with Lucia which I would like to share with you.

Hi Lucia, can you tell us a bit about yourself:

I’m 9 years oldI was born in Vietnam and I’ve grown up in Hong Kong, my Mum is Australian and my Dad is Argentinean so it’s a rather complicated story!!!

I live in Discovery Bay, Hong Kong and I go to Discovery College.

What was it that first made you start to think how important it is to look after our planet?

My eco journey started when I was 4 years old on Hong Kong’s dirty beaches.

Dana from Plastic Free Seas came to my preschool and gave a presentation. After that we did a big beach cleanup all together with my classmates.

What is the message you would like to deliver to people?

“Stop thinking. Start acting”.

Anyone can make a difference, even children.

There are so many alternatives to single use plastics: reusable water bottles, bags, cutlery, straws and food containers.

What are you most worried about when it comes to taking care of our Earth?

The plastic waste problem.

We need to listen to the scientists. They have done all the research. They have the solutions.

We just need to act now and change our lifestyles with small green steps to make a difference.

Can you tell us one thing that everyone could do at home to help the environment?

You could make your party an ecoparty and stop single use plastic waste.

You could turn off the lights when not in use and save water by turning off the tap when you brush your teeth.

Is there more that businesses like restaurants and shops could do?

YES!!! They can stop using plastic straws and giving children single use plastic cutlery and cups.

I heard that you are going to be one of the speakers at The Conscious Festival in Hong Kong by Green. Are you nervous? What are you going to talk about?

No I’m not nervous. I’m very excited to share my eco-journey!

I’m going to talk about my eco-journey and my new project I’ve started with my Mum –  Ecoparties

Can you tell us a little about Eco Parties?

Ecoparties is a rental service providing reusable cups, plates and cutlery.

We deliver to your venue and we EVEN do the washing up!

After my sister and I went to so many birthday parties last year we saw that they were creating so much waste as everything went in the rubbish bin. So we decided enough was enough!

Ecoparties wants to create change in our community, one party at a time.

Finally, what would you like to be when you grow up?

An ecowarrior/ artist/ actor……..

Since speaking to Lucia, she has already appeared as a speaker at The Conscious Festival – click on the link check to hear Lucia speak. Just 9 years old – wow!
