There are so many great shows on t.v. these days and it’s brilliant to see lots of shows with strong female casts.
You know, not just the token supporting female role . And not a girl show with “the smart one”, “the pretty one” and “the funny one”…..
Here are my top 5 shows with strong female casts. These are strong characters – they have something to say, they are kicking butt and they are often laugh out loud funny.
1.GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling)
The show follows a group of women in L.A. that perform on a ladies wrestling show in the 1980’s.
Ruth Wilder is a struggling actress. With no acting job in sight and no money, she takes a part in the show.
Her former best friend Debbie Eagan who is an ex soap actress (former friend due to an ill-conceived dalliance with Debbie’s husband) lands the big role in the show.
The rest of the girls are quite a band of misfits all with their own issues- girls who are struggling with their identity, in conflict with family, relationship dramas and much more.
As their act develops and their popularity grows, so does their bond of friendship.
The wrestler characters played by the girls are hugely entertaining. Ruth’s stereotypical Russian baddy pitted against Debbie’s wholesome American Liberty Belle takes centre stage.
This is just a group of regular girls struggling through life. Though they all are very different, they are bound by their crazy experience and show the best of girl’s friendships.
Meet the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. Warning: Some strong language (and some other naughty stuff too….)
I love Ruth’s audition at beginning of this clip – so funny……..
2. Big Little Lies
Based on Liane Moriarty’s book, the show stars Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shaliene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz (yes daughter of Lenny!) and Laura Dern.
It is set in a tranquil beachside town called Monterey in California.
Madeline, Celeste and Jane reign supreme in this idyllic town where they live their perfect lives with their successful husbands, beautiful children and stunning homes – or do they??
A single Mom arrives in town, disrupting their circle and soon we see that, underneath the surface, there lies jealousy, lies, fractured relationships and troubled marriages.
The ladies take us on a dark path that ultimately climaxes with a murder. And that’s just season 1!
Meet the ladies of Monterey:
“Kind of like a dirty old Prius parked outside Barneys”
The show boasts a great cast, spins a darkly comic tale and has a great theme song and soundtrack to boot.
Nicole Kidman and Laura Dern have both won Golden Globes and Emmy awards for their performances in the show.
Reese Witherspoon started excited rumours of a Season 2 when she posted a photo of her and the other ladies on her social media. Like many, many others, I was excited when the rumours proved true.
Season 3? The rumours say so – fingers crossed!
Put it on your list of shows to watch.
The show follows four 20′ something girls – Hannah, Marnie, Jesse and Shoshanna trying to navigate their way through their friendships and lives in New York.
People instantly sought to make comparisons between Girls and Sex in the City but, to me, being 4 girls in New York City is where the similarity ends.
The main character is narcisstic Hannah (played by Lena Dunham) who is an aspiring (unpublished) writer. The girls, while all very different to each other, are friends. Along the way, we celebrate their (not very frequent) triumphs with them but more frequently sympathise or are entertained by their more regular disasters and mishaps.
Lena Durham actually came up with the idea with the show, pitching it as:
‘I don’t see myself or my friends represented on television’”
The show instantly made an impression when it premiered in 2012 because these girls are real and relatable.
4. Orange is the New Black
I actually only have watched the first two seasons of this which I absolutely enjoyed. It’s clearly been very popular and one I need to go back and watch again.
Piper Chapman is a “nice girl” with a career and a finance. But, her past catches up with her and she ends up serving time in a minimum security prison.
As you can imagine, Piper meets all sorts of interesting characters at Danbury Prison like Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren, Sophia (hairstylist to the other inmates) and Galina “Red” Reznikov who rules with an iron fist.
The show boasts 7 seasons, a hoard of awards and holds the title of Netflix’s most watched original series.
The last time I watched a show set in a female prison was Prisoner Cell Block H – who else remembers that one???
5. Derry Girls
This is a very Irish comedy show but I had to include it – it’s sweet and laugh out loud funny.
It’s about a group of 4 school girls – Erin, Clare, Michele and Orla (and token Derry Girl James) set in Derry city in Northern Ireland in the 1990’s.
Erin and her friends are growing up in a divided city during The Troubles where armed soldiers and military checkpoints on the streets are part of daily life.
Yet it is normal teenage girl issues that is their focus – like chasing boys and sneaking off to a Take That concert behind their parent’s backs.
Their friendship is strong – they have a firm bond that binds them together whether they are grappling against teachers, against parents, against other kids at school or against The Troubles.
This clip is the emotional finale to Season 2. In the background, the adults are watching the news on tv reporting on a bomb that has just gone off. Meanwhile, oblivious, the girls are having a dramatic teenage angst moment in school, standing by Orla in her embarrassing talent show performance.
Warning: Some strong language
My favourite character though is Sister Michael, their school principal – I don’t think this woman’s calling was to teach……
Bring on Season 3!
So there it is, my Top 5 shows with strong female casts. Time to get the popcorn in – Enjoy!
