Momtrepreneur of the Week

In this feature series, I briefly introduce some fabulous entrepreneurial ladies – a fun snapshot of the lady behind the business.

Peggy Lau of Kayla Layla Handmade
Describe your business in 25 words or less?

Kayla Layla is a range of cosmetics and skincare products made with natural ingredients that are safe for children.

Where did you live and what did you work at before you came to
Hong Kong?

I was born and grew up in Hong Kong. and went to Australia to study.

We lived in Taiwan for a year after our first child was born.

I’ve worked in different fields – I was a merchandiser, a personal assistant, an airline customer service officer, a marketing executive at an IT company, a legal secretary…….

Do you remember the first time you made a sale?

Yes, of course!!

At the beginning, all my customers were my friends or friends of my friends!

One day, I was keeping my Facebook page up to the date when I saw a message sent to my page from someone that completely had no connection with me or my friends! She ordered the Bug Repellent Balm and the lip balm!

I told my husband immediately! First customer that was not friend a of our friends!!!

As a home business, where’s the strangest place you’ve taken a
work call?

I don’t really have work calls, messages from Facebook Page or Instagram mostly.

I usually reply while I am preparing for dinner in the kitchen, in front of the school while waiting to pick up my children, when we are watching a movie at home etc hahaa!

What would you say is the worst idea you’ve ever had when it
comes to your business?

The worst idea I have ever had was trying to invent a lot of different products at the same time. I do not have enough time and energy to do everything!.

As I’m a mum of 3 children (and we did not have any close family member or helper at the time) with all the extra workload I gave myself, it drove me crazy!!

And yes, I’m the only person running this little business, including making the products.

What do your kids think about their Mom being an entrepreneur?

My children are 7.5 years old, almost 6 years old and 4.5 years old.

They now think mummy is a super mum!

Mummy playing with them, teaching them, cooking and doing the homework – and Mummy can make so many products for them to use!

My children are so proud that their Mummy can make money too!

This business started all because of our youngest daughter – Kayla. That’s why we named the business Kayla Layla.

Tell us one interesting thing about you that most people may not
know.

For people who know me after I had children, I used to be really outgoing and love meeting up with my friends for a drink every Friday and Saturday.

What would be your karaoke song of choice?

Definitely “I want it that way” by the Backstreet Boys!

I just love Backstreet Boys! Back in University, I was dreaming of marrying Howie or AJ! Haha

The teachers at my daughter’s school have been very lucky to receive some beautiful lip balms end of last school year from Kayla Layla. So wonderful to have such lovely handmade local products on our doorstep.

So ladies, if Peggy can do it, so can you. If you have always wanted to run your own business – Go for It, take that next step!
