In this feature series, I briefly introduce some fabulous entrepreneurial ladies – a fun snapshot of the lady behind the business.
Louise Kaus of Eco Parties
Describe your business in 25 words or less?
A rental service for reusable tableware and waste free solutions for parties and events – cups, plates, cutlery, cloth napkins, tablecloths and handmade, upcycled decorations.
Where did you live and what did you work at before you came to Hong Kong?
Before moving to Hong Kong 6 years ago we were living in Vietnam.
I was working at the Australian Embassy but my passion was working on community development projects at orphanages and later events management at an arts cafe.
Do you remember the first time you made a sale?
My dear friends are always a huge support and were the first ones to book an EcoParty and buy bunting.
But the first few times I sold the bunting as part of the party kits it was very exciting! Pretty pink bunting for a little girl’s 4th birthday party. You are never too young to be an ecowarrior!
As a home business, where’s the weirdest place you’ve taken a work call?
I have so much trouble hearing on my phone I actually try to avoid taking calls at all costs and message instead.
Usually my not-so -quiet daughters are around so once I had to step out onto the balcony…… and of course they locked me out there!!!
What would you say is the worst idea you’ve ever had when it comes to your business?
Agreeing to collect a party kit late one Saturday night and doing the washing up until 1am!!!!
I just could NEVER leave the washing up until the next day.
What do your kids think about their Mom being an entrepreneur?
Well my daughters and I started EcoParties together so in many ways they think of it as their project as well.
They are involved with helping sometimes on the weekends with deliveries, more recently at the handmade market, sorting the flags for bunting and sometimes even the washing up!
Tell us one interesting thing about you that most people may not know.
I have lived in Asia for 16 years and have called Vietnam, Singapore and Cambodia home.
I volunteered for 3 years with ethnic minority groups in the remote highlands of central Vietnam. This was my dream job, working in the area of community development.
What would be your karaoke song of choice?
I’m a terrible singer but I’d give ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’ a try!
Louise is a superstar in our local Discovery Bay community in Hong Kong, always seeking to make our neighbourhood a greener place. I love the concept of Eco Parties and my kids were totally proud that their last birthday parties have been Eco Parties – the bunting is so cute and pretty.
Louise’s young daughter Lucia helps her Mum out with Eco Parties and is a passionate environmental activist. Last April, I interviewed 9 year old Lucia for my blog – you can read the piece here. What an incredible young lady and obviously inspired by her Mum!
So ladies, if Louise can do it, so can you. If you have always wanted to run your own business – Go for It, take that next step!
